I just said to my wife yesterday, "I am so glad we don't live in SL anymore." With the air quality and the cold and all that. You need to come on down to God's country and then you can get a few good workouts.

From Cheston on Sun, Jan 28, 2007 at 11:15:41

That's why I love it out here at Coral Pink. The air is always nice. As long as you don't mind only having one route to train on and 6000ft of elevation, it's a good place to train.

I'm glad to see that your back after it agin. I'm looking forward to the warmer weather. Sometimes I wish I had a treadmill.

I ran the 1st 5K in the SLC 30K series.  The most notable part of the race was the poor air quality, and the temperature, and the fog.  The Salt Lake Track Club is a good group of people and the race was fun, I'd do it again.  The race starts at Saltair and is an out and back along the I-80 frontage road (old North Temple), it's flat as a pancake out there.  Saltair is like a giant  rundown barn, perfect place to stage a race.  The race started at 10:00 am and it was bone chilling cold.  Usually a good view of the lake, but everything was frozen, and foggy really flat light.  I never really felt good the whole way, I was cold.  I need new racing tights or something, my legs were cold.  I was surprised at how fast the leaders were going. I think the winner did it in about 15 minutes, I finished about 22, which was about what I was expecting to do.   I'm looking forward to the 10K in 2 weeks.

Thanks for encouragement! May I suggest that you wear 2-3 layers on the warm-up and then when take them off right before the race and just wear tights, you will only be cold for about 1 minute of the race because of the increased pace. Also, there is a special material that you can get tights/long sleeves made out of that is slightly thicker and much warmer. I have a stretchy tight long-sleeve from Under Armour made of 64% nylon/22% polyester/14% Elastane that is perfect for wearing as a single layer in anything less than 30 degrees, and too hot for anything warmer.

Ran to Sugarhouse Park.  I slipped on some ice on the way home and hit the ground HARD.  The ice caught me by surprise, I thought I was being careful.  Felt pretty good until I slipped, barely made it home.  I think I bruised my ribs, I guess it could have been worse.  It hurts when I laugh or sneeze or cough.

This was the 2nd run in the STCTC winter series, the 15K is in 2 weeks.  I enjoyed this more than the 5K.   I planned on a time between 45 & 50, and I finished right about where I had planned at 48 minutes and some change, and did not suffer too much in the process.   I went out slow then picked it up from about mile 1 to 4.  I knew I had it made at mile 4 and backed off and relaxed.  The weather was much better than I expected.  I won a SLCTC tee-shirt in the raffle after, that was cool.  Ran downtown to the movie theater and watched Casio Royale after, then ran home, a good day all in all.

This was the 3rd leg (15K) of the 30K SLCTC winter series.  This was probably the best leg.  I paced a slower friend on the way out, then I dropped her and went hard back. I think I made her go a little harder than she wanted to go on the way out, but that's what a pacer is for.  The weather could not have been better.  I felt great the whole way.  I took 15 minutes off my split time on the way back.  I was at least 10 or 15 minutes off my PR, but I really enjoyed the run and didn't really suffer at all.  Great view of the lake & mtns the whole way, and the course was flat and relatively dry, and passing all the people on the way back was an ego boost.  This is a highly recomended training race.

I got lost on the way to the Ogden Dee Events Center and was late for the race.  I was literally pinning my number on during the 1st 1000 yds of the race.  This is not an easy course, very very hilly.   There is hardly a flat section.  You hit a hill right off the starting line, then go back up that same hill on the way back at about mile 7.  It was relentless.  I was happy with my performance I finished under 1:20, which is what I wanted to do.  Althought the last uphill at about mile 9.5, truly hurt.  I recovered on the downhill, but slowed way down to do it.   There was a spot at the event center parking lot near the finish where you could short cut and cheat, and I don't know if the guy I got in the sprint with at the finish took it, but he showed up awful quick.  I sprinted him to the finish and he beat me by about 2 feet.   I finished 50th instead of 49th.  Yes a sprint finish for 49th place, that's competition !!!!  It was fun, and I'd do it again.  You got a nice tee shirt, and it was well organized.  I cooled down with two miles back in Salt Lake with the dog.

Well the weather was beautiful...  The course was good.  This wasn't my finest hour.  I should have know better, I didn't feel good going in, and didn't sleep well the night before.  I saw some friends at the start and they had a different race plan than me.  They wanted to go out fast.  I knew that was a bad idea.  I wanted to go out slow and steady.  The beginning of this race is downhill, then you hit some rollers about mile six and nine and ten.  I went out fast and faded at mile 6.   I enjoyed the course and had fun in Moab.   I'd run this again, what a beautiful course. Pretty good time in Moab, but not my finest race.  I think that was close to my slowest 1/2M.  There's always next year.....

Ran with the Salt Lake Track Club at Highland High.  It was a speed workout with some warm-up and cool down.  They said it would be hills, which I would have liked better, never really liked the track.  Did 10 x 800, the pace was about 6:30.  Then I did few laps around Sugarhouse I felt felt great, but I'm still shaking off Saturday's poor performance.  I'll redeem myself next year.  Watched Cinderella Man and read Runner World and feeling much more inspired......

This was one cold, wet experience.  I never really got comfortable.  I stopped a number of times along the way, but it's all good.  I enjoyed myself and other than the cold.  I didn't really over exert myself on this one.  I wanted to start further back in the corrals than where they put me.  I knew it was a bad idea to start so close to the front, and that I would go out faster than I needed to.  That's exactly what happened though.  I ran 6:55s the first two miles then had to stop for a bathroom break and to adjust my clothing.  I was pretty much cold the entire race.  I jogged the rest of the way in, walked through all the aid stations.  Other than getting passed by thousands of people, the fans and the scene was pretty motivating.  There are no words to describe, turning onto Boylston and the last 1000 yards before the finish.

I have no idea what place I was.....   but this was a great event.  I throughly enjoyed this race. I started feeling tired about mile 6,  I was running about 7:00/ mi. until then.  I slowed to about 7:45/ mi until mile 12.  I slowed way down when I hit State Street, about mile 12. I don't know why, I was just staring at the city.   Then I got tired of being passed.  I got passed by a big booty and picked it up to the finish.  It was great course and the organization was flawless, with the exception of the marathon and 1/2 marathon drop bags being mixed together, so you had to wait a long time to get your drop bag.   This is a good race.  I didn't really race it, but I had a good time.  I did the marathon last year and I didn't like that as much, the SLC 1/2M is where it's at....

Ran the Law Day 5K in the morning.  This is not a runners race.  I've never seen more lawyers and paralegals in my life.  They are an uptight and humorless group.  My only goal was to show up, and I accomplished that with about 5 hours of sleep, so I was happy with my performance.  They did a pretty good job with the race logistics, and it was kind-of nice running through the U of U campus.  They had good coffee.  The first 1/2 is up to the top of campus and the finish is down to the law school building.  I was pretty relaxed the whole time and the weather was perfect.  I have no idea what place I was.  They had timing chips but I didn't bother with that.   I didn't even wear a watch.  The U of U homecoming/alumni 5K is more fun.  It started raining after the race, and I ran another 5 miles slow in the rain through Gilmer Park.
