Ran D-news Marathon. I thought the course was great. I never ran this before. I think I suffered from some heat exhaustion. I thought I was going to melt. I was in bad shape for about 4 or 5 hours after. They need to start this race earlier in the morning before the heat.

Welcome to the blog! You are not alone in suffering from the heat/downhill pounding. Corbin Tally (4th place finisher), and Steve Ashbaker (5th place finisher) were carried to the medical test after they crossed the line. The times were slow for everybody.

After seeing the Des News pictures, I realized that we ran together for a short while on Wasatch Blvd. during the race. I'm the guy in red behind you in the following picture: http://www.e-sphoto.com/races2006/dn_06/421/HTML/421.htm

Ran Jupiter Peak Steeplechase. It is ridiculously steep at the top. My calf felt better, but I was super slow. It didn't really matter, the view is great, I didn't get hurt. They changed the course over previous years. Instead of starting downhill, you start uphill imediately from the starting line, and continue for 7 or 8 miles..... up, up, up. The top is a steep and loose scramble up to the peak which I think is about 10,000-feet. It was good fun and will try to do it again next year.

I finished about 60th place, which is surprising considering I started 20 minutes late. I didn't start passing the back of the packers until about mile 3. I was relaxed the whole time, it was fun. I like the Park City course. I'll probably do that race again.

My watch said 3:37, my offcial time was 3:57. I was trying for somewhere in between 3:30 and 4:00, I wasn't sure how hard the course would be, I had heard rumors that it was really hard. I didn't think it was any harder than the Des-News. I'll pick up the pace a little at St. George.

Interesting. You mentioned your legs were not sore. Could you elaborate more on this lack of motivation?

I know running a marathon puts some kind of invisible stress on your body and mind in addition to just ripping up the legs and delpeting your glycogen. I have experienced it, and perhaps more after the Deseret News marathon than at any other time.

Ran the Mid Mountain Marathon in Park City. It was the third leg of the Triple Trail Challenge. The MMM is some hard running, almost all on single track trails. The trail is beautiful though with the fall colors. I took a digger at about mile 13, luckily it wasn't too rocky. I really slowed down after that. I cut my face, arm and leg, and got totally covered in dust and mud. My shirt will never be the same. I guess I'm just lucky that's all that got hurt. I managed to finish in about 4:43. I felt great at the end, a little wobbly maybe. Went on a 3 mile hike in the afternoon.

Ran the TOU Marathon in Logan. That's a pretty fun marathon. I'd do that one again. It was freezing at the top, I was cold the whole race. I need to wear more clothes next time. I felt surprisingly good considering my training consisted playing golf, walking, biking, and one long run. About mile 19.5 there was a girl puking on the side of the road that I passed, and I started not feeling so good myself. I didn't need to see that. I got it back together and tried to pick it up for the finish, but I started to cramp at about mile 25.5. I slowed way down for the finish line. Finished in about 3:30. I came home and went on a hike for another 2 miles in the afternoon. I ran the TOU with a left shoe from an old pair of shoes with about 400 miles on them and the right was a newer shoe with about 75 miles. It was the same color/brand except the older shoe was little dirtier. It felt wierd at first then I forgot about it.

Been considering running the California International Marathon in December or maybe the City of Trees in Boise in November. I need another BQ. Probably could have done it at the TOU, but it wasn't really part of the plan. There was also the shoe issue, at least I had a right and a left shoe. I'm going to take a wait and see approach to the 5K on Saturday.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
2.0026.2028.20

Ran the St. George Marathon. My training, or lack there of, payed off. What a great race. I was worried going in. I ran the TOU 2 weeks ago and suffered cramps the last mile or so. So I sort-of stopped training. I did one long one a week ago Friday, and ran the U of U Alumni 5K fast the next day, but the rest was minimal, 2 miles max. I think the difference was sleep, and food before the race. I stayed in Cedar City the night before and slept great, and had Mexican food. I started between the 3:20 and 3:30 pacers. About mile 7 or 8 I saw the pacer. I almost caught up about 12, but got dropped at the mile 13 aid station. I slowed way down at all the aid stations. I never lost sight of the pacer, and about mile 20 mile, I cranked it up to 6:30- 6:40 miles, and caught back up. It turned out it was the 3:10 pacer. He really helped me the last mile. I finished in 3:09 a new PR. I felt great at the end too. Drove back to SLC and hiked a few miles with the dog. Pretty happy with the results. Thinking about the California International.

Great work on the PR! I ran CIM in 2004; it's a pretty good event, but the course is not as fast as advertised. Lots of rollers throughout and there are some "hills" toward the end that are not well placed. I use quotation marks because any other day they wouldn't feel like hills, but they sucked some life out of me. It's a well run event, however. Tucson is probably faster if you're looking for a speedy December marathon.

You had a great race on Saturday. To be honest, I was a little surprised since your mileage has been mostly racing miles lately. You obviously played the last couple of months very smart allowing your body to recover.

If you are interested in the St George series, I suggest signing up right away. They are limiting it to 500.

From Andy on Tue, Oct 10, 2006 at 17:03:32

Thanks for the Boston advice. I'll be interested to hear how CIM is if you decide to run it. If I don't make it through St. George's lottery next year, I am considering CIM for my sub-3 attempt.

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, Oct 12, 2006 at 10:06:36

Evan - I hate running in cold rain, snow, wind, etc. But running in adverse weather conditions is critical to reaching your potential. When circumstances start controlling your training, bad things happen. But if you stay the course and train with the attitude of getting it done no matter what, you will surprise yourself.

What a great goal, go for it. Sounds like we're at the same place, I've ran 9 marathons myself. My dad just turned 50 and ran his first marathon this year, he did it in 3:35.

I think your new goal is great, go for it. St. George was my first marathon (2:59:58) and still my favorite. You worked for State Parks as well? I love it here, I'll retire with state parks. I'm a park ranger at Coral Pink Sand Dunes (near Kanab).

I've come close to winning a smaller marathon. Last year Valley of Fire 2nd overall, it's a tough one. It's coming up next month.

So you know my neck of the woods? I've been out here 2 1/2 years now, it's a good place to train if you like running in the sand.

Sounds like you did a lot of work out here. The water continues to be great. We had to have our well redone again this year, the casing shifted and broke half way down the 900ft hole. Yes, we finally finished the new boardwalk this summer. It's actually now a walkway leading out to an observation deck. It's 10 times the last one and should last the test of time. No wood was used. It's all concrete (dyed to match the sand) and stainless steel. You'll have to come check it out one of these days. It has power on the observation deck for interps and shade.

I've ran the Ogden twice now and think it's pretty simular to the St. George, other then the end. I hate the bike trail they make you run on, it really slows one down. I think the St. George it probably a faster marathon.

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Oct 25, 2006 at 15:58:17

St. George is a lot faster.

From Evan on Wed, Oct 25, 2006 at 16:20:44

Has anyone run Tucson? That's suppose to be a PR course.

From Cheston on Thu, Oct 26, 2006 at 18:28:19

I've got a buddy that's ran it. He says it's flat and very fast. I'm guessing it's pretty fast, but I don't know if it's faster than a down hill marathon. I guess St. George does have it's fare share of hills. My buddy says he runs faster there than St. George. He's an old man, so I guess it's just easier on his joints.

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, Oct 26, 2006 at 20:22:11

Evan - you can run 3:09 skipping days like this, but to run sub-3 would be very difficult. Make sure to get out daily, even if the time constrains allow you to go only for 2-3 miles. Check out Ted's blog. He is has 4 kids, is in charge of ROTC at BYU, and if you looked at his schedule, it is packed. But he gets his run in every day, and it is usually at least 8 miles. His secret is that his run often starts at 5:00 am.

I ran that race in near Lake Mead, NV, the Valley of Fire Marathon. "Evan's no training - training plan” didn’t pay off as well as it did in St. George. However, I was 3rd in my age group (actually 4th, but the 3rd place overall was in my age group, and you can't win overall & age group, so I got 3rd, cool huh) and 12th overall. I got passed by the guy who was second a few hundred yards from the finish, I was ahead of him the whole race, and just started cramping up on the downhill finish. I think the results say more about the competition than, my training. I got a 3:46:56. It’s a tough marathon, but a really pretty run through red rock and desert. It looks kind-of like Death Valley, or Snow Canyon, I kind-of felt a little like Forrest Gump running through the desert. It's an out and back through the Valley of Fire State Park. There's some rollers and, and few long uphill grades. There's a section going out from the Visitor Center to the top of a dugway about mile 6 to mile 12 that is relentless and you can see the steep dugway coming from a long way out. There is a big hill mile 24 to 25, with a pitch that is San Francisco steep at the top. That was just cruel. I remember coming down it on the way out, and thinking gosh this is steep, this doesn’t look good. It has a 1.2-mile downhill finish, which I got passed on by at least 5 people because I got cramps, every time I tried to go faster. I'd recommend this race, but definitely not as a first marathon. I saw a few people I knew. It was fun, kind of a low-key, small town marathon probably about 100 or so starters in the marathon. They also had a 1/2M and a 10K, maybe 300 people total, most were there for the 1/2M.

The race is pretty casual, no prize money, virtually no spectators, kind-of a cool shirt & medal for finishers. The organizers are very friendly. Park your car at Overton Beach on Lake Mead, and take a short bus ride to the start, sing the national anthem and you’re off. There is an uphill start, followed by a series of rollers, miles 1-6. There is a relentlessly uphill section from 6 to 12, then downhill to the turn-around, back uphill to the top of the dugway at about mile 14.5, or so, and then a long downhill to the Visitor’s Center. I felt good most of the race, especially the downhill section mile 14 to about 20, I passed a few people in this section. I slowed way down on the rollers miles 20 – 25 on the way back, legs felt fine, I would just start cramping if I went too fast.

If you like small races and don’t mind a hard course with good scenery, you’d like this race.

I took a short and slightly painful hike when I got home.

I sure enjoyed reading the report. I could almost picture myself doing a Forrest Gump run while reading about the course. It would be fun to run a small marathon like that, but I can't imagine enjoying a San Francisco slope at the end of a marathon. Nice job!

I've recovered from the VOF marathon, but I still have a horrible blister on my left foot. It was a deep one right on the sole of my foot. I need new socks.

I love this race. Basically jogged the whole thing slow and saw a lot of friends, even walked some. I let my brother beat me and I think he felt good about that. Started slow, got slower on the short uphill portion in City Creek then picked back up for the finish in Memory Grove. The weather was little chilly, but a great way to start Thanksgiving Day. I think I could have knocked 10 minutes off the time, maybe next year. I've run this route a lot.

Ran Sugarhouse Park and back through the 15th & 15th neighborhood. Felt good the whole way.

Did some fast intervals through Liberty Park. I'm feeling pretty good. I think I need some new socks, and winter clothing. I like winter running better I've decided. The blister from the Valley of Fire marathon seems to have healed for the most part, but I can still feel it. I need to change my bedtime, wierd sleep the last week. I've postponed the California Internation Marathon. I am now going to focus on the the Gaspirilla Bank of America marathon in Tampa in February.

Ran the Moab Winter Sun 10K. It was pretty cold in Moab, maybe in the 20s at the start, probably the teens, and clear. Paced a friend the first 2.2 miles at about 9:00/mi. At the top of the only little hill in this course, I sped things up to about 6:30/mi. It's a nice course, beautiful red rock cliffs with a dusting of snow on them. It starts of relatively flat or downhill, then there is a short uphill from about mile 2 to 2.25, then mostly flat or down. The last 1/4 mile is a lap around the high school track, which was kind-of cool. There were maybe 250 to 300 people in the race. The winner won in about 33 minutes. I was really sick last Wednesday, and Thursday, so I was kind-of surprised I made it to the race. My cold is still lingering, but it was fun anyway, I like Moab this time of year.

Finally got back out. Been sick as dog for about 2 weeks, flu or some kind of respritory virus. I like running in the cold but this is ridiculous.

Ran Fall Creek Road outside Sawpit, Colorado. I didn't think the high elevation would bother me as much as it did. It was beautiful country.

Jogged to Sugarhouse Park for the "Beat the New Year 5K." Then I ran the "Beat the New Year 5K. I beat the new year by about 7 minutes. I enjoyed the race. It was a festive atmosphere. The course is basically 2 and 1/4 laps around Sugarhouse Park in the counter clockwise direction. A group of people tried to cut it as close as possible to midnight, and there was a countdown and sort of a little sprint group. People wore costumes, and one guy ran it in only a speedo and Nikes. It was about 20F. A little chilly for just a speedo and Nikes. The prizes were for the costumes, coldest, fastest, and closest to midnight, and few other categories. The race wasn't timed as far as I know. There was a countdown clock counting down to midnight at the finish line. The race started at 11:30 PM. They gave you a nice long sleeve shirt and a nice little plaque if you beat the new year. It was fun, I'd do it again.
